SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Grayson College held the first open enrollment of the year for the adult education and literacy program on Friday and Saturday.

All classes are “work at your own pace” and are covered by a government grant of just over $ 500,000.

Students enter the program with different levels of knowledge and through assessments in various subjects such as math, social studies, and science

Ana Martinez dropped out of high school ten years ago to support her family.

She works as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant and has seen both working hours and wage cuts due to the pandemic.

Hoping for a “better future for me and my son”, she took her first math test for the program on Saturday.

“(I) just slacked off because I didn’t do much,” Martinez said. “I’m just looking at my son and I have to do better for him.”

All adult education programs offered through the college are free to students and include general education, English classes, citizenship and civics test preparation, Texas Success Initiative preparation, and literacy and math classes.

Deputy director Davinia Ransom said enrollment has declined, but students typically finish their programs between six months and two years.

“Many of the people who go through our program have had something in their past that they cannot continue their education with,” said Ransom.

The program is available to anyone aged 16 and over living in Counties of Grayson, Fannin, and Cooke. Enrollment has dropped over the past year, according to Ransomware, even though courses are offered for free.

“We just want to give them a base to know where to start and where the student has to be.”

Classes for the various programs take place every Wednesday in February from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On the same days and at the same times, events for open enrollment will also take place in the Advanced Technology Building on campus.

Interested parties only need to bring a government-issued ID.
