The grownup schooling course presents poetry, native information tales


NEWBURYPORT – Sandra Thaxter, a member of the Unitarian Church’s anti-racism group, will be delivering readings in a four-hour online adult and community education course in Newburyport entitled “Voices of Women of African Descent” starting February 25th at Zoom .

Thaxter works with communities in Kenya and FEMRITE women’s publisher in Kampala.

This collection of poems and short stories ranges from Egyptian queens and early slave tales to today’s poets, writers, and journalists.

These stories are from an anthology by Daughters of Africa, Women of African Descent.

Authors include Phillis Wheatley, Sojourner Truth, Jesse Redmon Fauset, Anne Spencer, Virginia Brindis de Salas, Mabel Segun, Jayne Cortez, Nikki Giovanni, Grace Akello, Grace Nichols, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Nikki Finney.

All participants can choose from these collections and read.

The class is limited to 10 people and costs $ 40. The Zoom sessions take place every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
